It stars Warren William, Joan Blondell, Aline MacMahon, Ruby Keeler, and Dick Powell, and features Guy Kibbee, N Web‘Gold Diggers of 1933’ doesn’t quite manage the standard of ‘42nd Street’, though a surreal streak and a certain acerbic wit manage to keep things well afloat. The structure is familiar, the ‘backstage musical’ a great moneymaker for Warner during the Great ‘D-word’, and many of the cast are recycled from the aforementioned Lloyd Bacon production.
