Land officers included the secretary of state (1669'1776), the agents of Earl Granville (1748'76), or the county entry taker (1778'present). A letter dated April 11, 1623, describes Lieutenant Pearce as "the fairest in Virginia", and a document dated May 29, 1623, names Lieutenant Pierce as "governor of James Town".
