WebPlymouth was hit by intermittent small scale bombing raids throughout 1940. Its docks and naval base made it a major target and in March and April 1941, Plymouth and neighbouring Devonport suffered a series of devastating raids. More than 900 people were killed and 40,000 were made homeless. WebThe German air attack on the evening of Monday 21st April 1941 lasted 6 hours. 120 German planes arrived over Plymouth in waves from 8.39pm. First came the Heinkel III pathfinders, dropping flares and ten thousand incendiary bombs. Through the flames, aircraft of the Groupe KG27 arrived, their targets lit for them as bright as daylight.
